It is generally believed that gin originated in the Netrherlands around the 16th century. Popularity quickly grew, partly due to medicinal applications. Genever eventually even led to English gin, but always retained its own tradition. Nowadays, there are various styles, with a particular distinction often made between old Genever and young Genever.

The base of gin is usually neutral (grain) alcohol and malt wine, to which juniper berries and other botanicals are added. In some Genevers, the influence of barrel aging is flavor-defining. An oak barrel can impart flavors of, for example, vanilla and caramel, while unaged Genevers are purer and sometimes more robust in character.
